Yesterday, I was riding my motorbike from Bromsgrove to Lincoln. I stopped at Tamworth services and had a coffee. When I went back to my motorbike there was a man smoking a cigarette and looking very anxious. He had with him a rucksack and a motorcycle helmet. He told me that his motorbike had broken down and he really needed to get to Nottingham. I agreed to take him to a services just outside Nottingham.

I became rather concerned for him when he shuddered rather violently and involuntarily as we walked over to my motorcycle. He started to put the rucksack on his back but I insisted that he put it in the pannier.

On the way to Notts I occasionally felt him shudder. When I pulled up in the services we had agreed on I was surprised to find he was not there! I couldn't resist looking in his rucksack where - to my astonishment - I found £500,000 in used notes.

    I didn't phone 999, I took the money instead.

What should I do? I feel so guilty.

Finders keepers. You'd think a guy with a bag full of 500k pounds would be able to call for a car....

    This question is fishy.

Take the money to your local authorites. If he was a thief they need to know. He may have been involved in someone getting hurt or killed to obtain that money. Also, take yout motorcycle with you and do not touch anything the man's hands may have touched - there could be fingerprints the police can use.

Although the A42/M42 does have it's bumps and flaws, none are as huge as this porky pie.
Go get yourself some sleep and imagine men in leather trousers with shiny helmets holding on to your pannier.

Just keep your mouth shut and do as I tell you.
I know who you are, I've had you checked out.
I took your registration number, and I know where you live. Sit on it, stop telling people about it or it'll be worse for you.
My boy's will be in touch.

So to re-cap - as a Good Samaritan , you gave a guy in distress a lift - only to find you lost the passenger en route - but found you still had his bag with 1/2 million squid.
Awkward one, that. I see your dilemma.
Is it better to let sleeping dogs lie - with a racing certainty the guy was a drug dealer and the ill-gotten cash could never be properly refunded or applied to a good cause?
Or involve Mr Plod - surrender the cash -risking prosecution for dangerous driving - loss of passenger - or even deliberate stealing of the cash you now regret?
I can only say I'm glad it's your problem - not mine.
(If faced with such - I confess I'd take 5% (25k) as a"finder's fee" - to clear current worrisome debts and compensation for the incident - and then find a way to donate the other 475k to a charity working for those in Darfur - without a scintilla of guilt)

Make sure that they are not forged notes, wait for him to contact you, if he does not you'll have to let your conscience decide whether to hand the money in, or to accept it as a gift from a hitchhiker.

I dream about such a thing happening to me sometime. In reality I suspect I may have given more respect when you "felt the shudder" and perhaps may have looked round. Possibly he may now be dead and the £500,000 should form part of his estate. You should visit the police and inform them of the accident and hand over the money. If he is still alive having bounced off the road then the £500,000 should be returned to him.
