It really depends on the department... this is not controlled by state law, it is department policy.

It is a prestigious rank, but not always a high one.

In smaller departments, it could be the same classification as patrol, just different job duties. In our department, and similar sized ones in the area, it is a lateral transfer, with the same pay, as patrol.

In some of the bigger cities in our area, such as Green Bay, WI PD, detectives get the same pay as patrol sergeants.

In larger departments, there is a separate detective buearu, and the have their own rank structure, usually run by a Captain, with Lieutenants that run a shift, and Sergeants on the shift.

It's a higher ranking than Patrol Officer.
It usually parallels a Sergeant in pay.

It usually (but not always) equals Sergeant pay. The position does not include supervisory authority.

Detective is not a rank , it is an assignment or title...there is still a chain of command ie. detective sgt,det.Lt.,etc. usually parallel but equal to patrol(uniform).
